about

Roger Marsh was an Englishman that I met and became friends with on the Jitters tour there (supporting Heart) in 1988. Roger was a part-time songwriter of some considerable talent, and he'd written a version of this song. I asked if I could re-write and add some parts to it, and he agreed. I honestly can't remember which parts are mine and which his, except I'm pretty sure that all the music except the bridge came from Roger, and the verse lyrics are all mine. Anyway, after all these years, I am still very pleased with the result, but the song has suffered from end-of-the-CD syndrome, meaning it never gets listened to, or not very often. And that's too bad. Because I think it's one of the better songs I have had a hand in.

lyrics

words and music by
Roger Marsh & Blair Packham

I had a dream
That everything was beautiful
The sky was a blue I’d never seen
And as I walked
The road to discovery
It came to me at once:
This was no dream
The mind unconscious
Or the mind asleep
A secret garden of the words you speak
(But when all the talking’s done...)

I see
Further than I think
That’s why I think I cannot see
Down the endless road
I see
Further than I think
So I’m distracted by the end
Down that endless road
The road to discovery

I saw a door
With a mirror on the outside
And a key in the lock
Waiting to be turned
And so I did:
My reflection unreliable
I was left to wonder
Just what I’d learned
Am I a crease on your pillow
Or just a ringing phone
Are all my questions cutting close to the bone
(I’ve really got to know...)

I see
Further than I think...

Now I’m turning down your street
With an address
And a feeling of cold feet
Will you warm me?

I see
Further than I think...

about

Blair Packham Toronto, Ontario

New album "The Impossible Dream" coming soon! Thirteen years after 2004’s “Could’ve Been King," Blair Packham returned with a collection of clever and heartfelt songs, called “Unpopular Pop.” A bit Beatle-y, with shades of Elvis Costello, Blair’s songs are undeniably all his. He made the record at home and then called on Ron Sexsmith and ex-Barenaked Ladies’ Steven Page to make vocal appearances. ... more
