about

Wrote this with Arlene in our living room on Wychwood Avenue in Toronto. It was always hard writing songs with Arlene, because she was so reluctant. She never wanted to co-write with me, and I always thought is was a waste, because we are both pretty good songwriters and I loved singing with her.

lyrics

Envy the sadness, envy the laugh
Envy the future, envy the past
Envy the daylight, envy the night
Envy the left then, envy the right
Envy the shy but is pride such a sin?
I’d like to die with a shit-eating grin

Envy suspicion, envy the truth
Envy superstition, envy the proof
Envy first to leave, envy the last
Envy the slow to love, envy the fast
Envy the woman that I’ve never met
I want her lover asleep in my bed

I want it, I want it all

Envy the circumstance, envy the luck
Envy the analyst, envy the nut
Envy the cancer, envy the cure
Envy the tainted, envy the pure
Envy the worker who gets so much done
I’d rather lie here and sleep in the sun

I want it, I want it all

Tastemakers, world shapers
Crowd pleasers and scenesters
The big boss the big shots
Not have nots, not have nots

Envy the idol, envy the god
Envy the prophet, envy the fraud
Envy the apple, envy the taste
Envy the Angel with the eighteen inch waist
Envy the judge who knows right from wrong
Pity the singer who brought you this song

about

Blair Packham Toronto, Ontario

New album "The Impossible Dream" coming soon! Thirteen years after 2004’s “Could’ve Been King," Blair Packham returned with a collection of clever and heartfelt songs, called “Unpopular Pop.” A bit Beatle-y, with shades of Elvis Costello, Blair’s songs are undeniably all his. He made the record at home and then called on Ron Sexsmith and ex-Barenaked Ladies’ Steven Page to make vocal appearances. ... more
