about

Started this one in the car, too. But I couldn't finish it. Arlene took over, on her own, and came up with the title and all the beautiful imagery about the leaves and the tree and the clouds and the sky, and finally, the verse that kills me, even to this day (especially to this day) about "will you stay with me 'til death?" (because we didn't, after all, stay together). But I wrote the melody of the song. And I wrote the bridge lyric, and I am particularly proud of that. The bridge refers to me and someone else who I loved that died, but it later came to resonate with me also as a reference to my dad, who passed on in 2003. "I'm glad my wish came true/You belonged to me/I belonged to you".

I love Maury LaFoy's bass line. He is such a genius at coming up with beautiful parts on the fly, in the room, on the recording floor. "Like Paul McCartney with music lessons", I always said about Maury, meaning it with no disrespect to either party (or music lessons, for that matter!). I also really love Fergus Hambleton's arrangement of strings and woodwinds for this song. It's lilting, melancholy but still hopeful, just like the song deserves. Though "I Don't Know" is another song that has probably suffered from end-of-the-CD-itis, I think this is one of my Really Good Ones.

lyrics

All we know is all we see
All the rest is a mystery
Do the clouds reach for the ground?
Does the silence yearn for sound?
I don’t know?

All we want is everything
Everything the world was meant to be
Do the leaves hold to the tree?
Does the shore belong to the sea?
I don’t know

A million stars hang up in the sky
And every one of them has been wished on
Once or twice
I’m glad my wish came true
You belonged to me
And I belonged to you

All we love is all we have
And all the rest is up for grabs
Will you love me like you said?
Will you stay with me ‘til death?
I don’t know
I don’t know but I hope so
I don’t know but I hope so

about

Blair Packham Toronto, Ontario

New album "The Impossible Dream" coming soon! Thirteen years after 2004’s “Could’ve Been King," Blair Packham returned with a collection of clever and heartfelt songs, called “Unpopular Pop.” A bit Beatle-y, with shades of Elvis Costello, Blair’s songs are undeniably all his. He made the record at home and then called on Ron Sexsmith and ex-Barenaked Ladies’ Steven Page to make vocal appearances. ... more
